Vessel with 65 people on board sends distress call near Christmas Island
Last night (July 10, 2012), three calls were made from a vessel requiring assistance approximately 100 nautical miles north of Christmas Island. At the request of AMSA’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC Australia), HMAS Childers boarded the vessel earlier this morning north of Christmas Island and rendered assistance. Initial indications suggest there are 65 people onboard. For safety and operational reasons, the people on board the vessel will be transferred to HMAS Childers and ACV Triton. In addition, all passengers from the vessel requesting assistance earlier yesterday were embarked in HMAS Childers and have subsequently been transferred to ACV Triton, which is now making its way to Christmas Island. Both HMAS Childers and ACV Triton are expected to arrive at Christmas Island this afternoon. The passengers from both vessels will be transferred to Australian Government authorities on Christmas Island.
